A man who allegedly threatened the occupants of an Oamaru house with an axe on Tuesday, was taken to Oamaru Hospital after collapsing in the Oamaru District Court’s holding cell yesterday.

Shaun Te Rangi Whitau (52) was arrested at 12.55am yesterday after a manhunt involving a dog squad brought in from Dunedin was started about 10pm on Tuesday.

That was sparked after he allegedly made "threatening remarks to a family member", a police media spokeswoman said.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said the man was allegedly holding an axe when he made the threats.

The case was to be called yesterday but, after his collapse, Whitau

was instead remanded in custody on burglary and aggravated burglary charges, to appear by audiovisual link in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow.
